For beer fans, nothing beats an authentic pint of Pilsner in one of Prague’s famous beer halls. The Czechs have been brewing in these buildings for centuries, and you can still take a seat at the long wooden tables and sample their world-class lagers and ales. That’s not to mention the tasty traditional food on offer as accompaniment. From the old breweries of U Fleků and U Glaubicu to trendier bars like Lokál Dlouhááá, the city is packed with places to enjoy a refreshing pint. Here are six of our favourite beer halls in Prague to get you started.
This place is over 550 years old and widely regarded as the top pick of Prague’s beer halls. It claims to brew the strongest beer in the entire Czech Republic – a legendary 11.8% semi-dark lager called X-Beer33. Prepare for your pint with a plate of their old-school Czech specialities, like roast beef in sour cream with bread dumplings and cranberries.
U Fleků is the city’s other seriously famous beer hall. Brewing non-stop for more than five centuries, its eight dining and drinking rooms look like they’ve been pulled out of some fancy old castle. You can try Czech staple dishes like goulash and dumplings alongside the brews. In the summer, the spacious courtyard beer garden has a great vibe.
A buzzing Old Town beer hall with a laidback design and reasonable prices to match, Lokál is popular for casual dinners. The bar itself is made of glass and filled with a line of big silver beer tanks – so you can be sure your pint is as fresh as they get. Follow it with a bite to eat from their menu of modern twists on Czech classics.
Close to Charles Bridge, U Glaubiců has a 700-year-old cellar and a beer hall dating back to 1520. The historic tavern used to be a favourite of the city’s wealthier set, but nowadays anyone can head there for a friendly atmosphere, cheap pints of pilsner and a big bowl of traditional cream of potato and mushroom soup.
Also known as Strahov Monastic Brewery, Klášterní is perched at the top of the hill, just behind Prague Castle. The views from up here are awesome, but wait until you’ve tried the beer. Choose from a selection of seasonal brews and a well-balanced IPA. In the summer, sip your pint outside in the Brewery Courtyard, while the two-storey restaurant and small beer hall are ideal for winter visits.
Founded in the ‘90s, Novomestsky Pivovar is a modern bar with a great reputation. The brewery and restaurant have won a stack of awards and only work with Czech malt and hops – you can watch it all fermenting in huge bronze tanks on a brewery tour. Try their unfiltered wheat beer alongside a national delicacy, like tangy garlic soup or goulash.
